YOUTH ARK is a nonprofit community-based organization working towards Youth empowerment, education and livelihood promotion in Uganda. YA aspires to improve the living conditions of the poor and marginalized by adopting strategies through community initiative, participation and sensitization. The organization has worked among backward communities in the southern areas of Kampala, identified as the most underdeveloped areas in Kampala district.
Project Description
Kampala is the capital city of Uganda has 5 divisions. However, Kawempe division is less developed, faced with floods, high levels of crimes, poverty, and unemployment. The residents spend most of the day doing nothing but in bars and gambling/betting places, taking drugs and then turn out at night to engage in theft, prostitution in other areas of the city. Since the current generation is a result of early pregnancy and single parenting, high levels of illiteracy due to low home incomes, societies of low or bad morals. The cycle goes on to result in a recurring related generation with no integrity in these communities. this project is to develop the integrity (values) and productivity (skills – computer, music production, sewing, nursery teaching, business administration, marketing and catering) of 400 Numbers of disadvantaged and poor adolescent girls, unemployed youth and young mothers in villages of Kawempe division in Kampala district” Training will aim at imparting skills.
Location: The project shall take place at the center of Youth Ark Uganda in Kazo, Kawempe division in Kampala, Uganda. the office is on Kawala road towards kawempe. the trainers shall be required to reach out of the office in surrounding villages of kazo, Bwaise, kawempe and Kalerwe which are all in Kawempe division.
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Collect information on all trainees through interaction and assessment of their abilities, strength, and weaknesses and propose possible necessary action
- Take part motivation talks to the youth (unemployed, young mothers e.t.c) at the center and outdoor programs
- Help in developing the intelligence of trainees through interaction in indoor and outdoor activities Support scheduled programs (self-discovery programs, opportunity identification, exploitation, and sustainability).
- Take part in indoor and outdoor project activities
- plan and take part in fundraising programs
- enforce and suggest house rules
- share personal abilities, experience, and cultures
- help in preparing youth for employment
