Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We seek to put God’s love into action, by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Founded in Americus, Georgia in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped build, renovate and repair more than 1 million decent, affordable houses sheltering more than 5 million people worldwide. Athens Area Habitat for Humanity has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people.
About the Volunteer Opportunity
Help us honor the National Day of Service and Remembrance as part of Thrivent Financial’s national Building on Faith Week by coming out for this weekend service project to clear, clean, and preserve the historic St. James Baptist Church Cemetery in Athens, GA.
This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to participate in the National Day of Service & Remembrance if you cannot do so on September 11th itself, which falls on a Wednesday this year. There is plenty to do for folks at all levels of ability, from clearing brush and small trees to cleaning up leaves and undergrowth to helping with refreshments, so even kids can get involved! This historic site dates back to the nineteenth century and it needs the community’s help to ensure that it is honored and preserved.
Volunteer Responsibilities
We’re asking volunteers to donate one hour of service to help clean and clear this historic site. Tools, gloves, refreshments, and event T-shirts will be provided, but you’re free to bring your own if you like, and it’s a good idea to wear long sleeves and bring some bug repellant — this is Georgia, after all. There won’t be heavy work involved, as most of the clearing will be of small volunteer saplings, vines, undergrowth, and leaves. Please carpool or, for church groups, use church vans if possible.
This event is co-sponsored by Athens Area Habitat for Humanity, Thrivent Financial Building on Faith 2019, and the Friends of St. James Baptist Church Cemetery.
