Generation Guiders is a non-profit, community-based organization registered in Nairobi, Kenya offering support to orphans and vulnerable children in selected informal settlements of Nairobi. The organization supports selected families with basic needs and support to fight drug and substance abuse among the youth while distributing sanitary towels to girls in the community.
Generation Guiders was established in 2009 by former street boys – (Erick Omondi and Nahason Ndaari) as a give back gesture to the society for having survived the tough times in the informal settlements, living on the streets and eventually being rescued and rehabilitated in a children’s home. Generation Guiders responds to challenges faced by orphans, vulnerable children, and needy families.
Girls’ Empowerment Camp
In August 2017, A girls empowerment camp will be held in Kenya, focusing on HIV/AIDS risk reduction, prevention, life-skills, and entrepreneurial training (income-generating activities). Entrepreneurial training is a crucial part of equipping the camp attendees with basic skills to help them develop sustainable livelihoods.
Learning income-generating activities and associated life skills are essential to lifting girls out of the poverty cycle and empowering them to resist pressure to exchange sex for money – an activity that exacerbates their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. The crumbling social structure due to HIV/AIDS has left thousands of girls without support or protection. The loss of parents leaves them with few role models or guidance in growing up. The cultural tradition of ignoring the rights of girls, and tolerance of sexual violence against women, further complicates the social situation of females.
The project will go on for 5 days, starting on August 20, 2017.
Volunteer Responsibilities
You need to be in Kenya to volunteer for this project. The organization is searching for 5 volunteers who can help them make the event successful. The volunteers will work closely with the organization’s management to coordinate and provide counseling, guidance, and teach during the session on the camp.
